Meet Joel: ClearCut’s Data Scientist

Joel Stevens is ClearCut’s Data Scientist and a huge asset to the team. While he’s incredibly analytical, collaborative, and insightful, Joel is also a master at trivia, the guitar, and long-distance running. We’re grateful to have Joel on our team and to interview him for our employee spotlight. Learn more about Joel, professionally and personally, through the below Q&A.

How would you describe your role at ClearCut?

I lead our machine learning efforts, so most of my time is spent reading papers and experimenting with different techniques in order to meet our business goals. I also collaborate with other members of the Development Team to create loading and transformation processes for new and existing data sources. Once we have this data loaded, I help with the data analysis and brainstorming future features with other team members.

How has ClearCut allowed you to work toward your professional goals?

ClearCut provides the ideal environment for a lifelong learner such as myself. We are constantly encouraged to experiment, fail, learn from our mistakes, and celebrate our successes.”

What excites you most about ClearCut’s future?

As the team grows, I’m excited to watch ClearCut continue to utilize a wide variety of data and extract valuable insights that no one else can provide. I believe this is what sets us apart in the market.

What is your proudest moment at ClearCut?

I really enjoyed working to develop a streaming data pipeline that can load thousands of large files and perform data transformations within minutes in our computer cluster. Another proud moment was when Danny (another member of our Development Team) and I figured out a way to simulate our big data cluster directly on our laptops, allowing us to develop code and reduce our use of expensive computer clusters, saving the company money.

What do you enjoy most about ClearCut’s culture?

I love the friendly and collaborative environment. The environment encourages out-of-the-box thinking and working with teams that Data Scientists would not typically interact with at other companies.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I’m an avid runner in my spare time. I also enjoy reading and playing guitar.

What are 3 things you’d choose to have with you on a deserted island?

  1. My wife
  2. Our dog Harley
  3. The Great Shark Hunt by Hunter S. Thompson.

What’s your favorite quote?

“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” – Carl Sagan
